Green Web Design

Sustainable digital

Every web page consumes energy. Every request has a carbon cost. At Opsidius, we build websites that are both high-performing and environmentally responsible — because digital sobriety isn't the enemy of excellence, it's the condition for it.

Our philosophy

Less clutter, more value

Green web design isn't about doing less — it's about doing better. Every feature is designed to deliver real value, every line of code is optimised, every image is compressed. The result: faster, lighter, more effective websites.

Functional design

No unnecessary features. Every functionality meets a real user need, validated upfront. Less complexity = fewer resources consumed.

Native performance

Optimised load times, minified code, lazy loading, smart caching. A fast website consumes less energy on both server and client side.

Technical sobriety

No unnecessary dependencies, no oversized frameworks. The right tool for the right job: Nuxt for performant apps, optimised WordPress for showcase websites.

Accessibility

An accessible website is a green website. By optimising for all users and all devices, we naturally reduce page weight and resource consumption.

RWEB Framework

The 115 best practices for green web design

We follow the RWEB framework by the GreenIT collective (5th edition, 2025) and the RGESN (78 criteria). These best practices cover the entire lifecycle of a web project: from functional design to development, through visual design, UX, and hosting.

Design & UX

Mobile-first design, elimination of superfluous animations, system fonts when possible, clean layouts focused on conversion. Less decoration, more efficiency.

Development

Lightweight, maintainable code, no unnecessary libraries, optimised API calls, server and client-side caching, static or hybrid rendering (SSG/SSR) to minimise server computation.

Optimised media

Images in WebP/AVIF, automatic compression, native lazy loading, responsive sizes (srcset), no autoplay video. Every KB counts.

Network & requests

Minimised HTTP requests, bundled resources, strategic CDN, HTTP/2 and Brotli compression. Fewer transfers = less network energy.

Measurement & monitoring

Regular audits with Lighthouse, EcoIndex and GreenIT Analysis. Tracking page weight, request count and estimated carbon footprint with every production deployment.

Sustainability

Long-term maintainable code, clear documentation, regular updates, no tech debt. A sustainable website is one you don't need to rebuild every 2 years.

Green hosting

Servers powered by renewable energy

OpsidiusInfomaniak — WordPress & AI

200%CO2
  • 200% CO2 offset (double their emissions)
  • 100% renewable energy (Swiss hydropower)
  • Datacentres in Geneva, cooling without air conditioning
  • ISO 14001 (environment) and ISO 50001 (energy) certified
  • Server lifespan extended to 15 years (vs 3-5 years industry standard)

Green design at every step

Our method

1

Audit & scoping

Analysing real needs vs. wants. Eliminating superfluous features from the design phase. Setting a target carbon budget for the project.

2

Lean design

Clean mockups, mobile-first, optimised typography. Energy-efficient colour choices (OLED). Validating target page weight before development.

3

Optimised development

Lightweight code, no unnecessary dependencies, automatically compressed images, static rendering when possible. Performance testing at every sprint.

4

Hosting & monitoring

Deployment on green servers (Infomaniak or AWS). Continuous performance and carbon footprint monitoring. Regular post-launch optimisations.

Frequently asked questions

Green web design in practice

  • No, quite the opposite. Green design pushes towards sobriety and elegance. The world's best-performing websites (Apple, Stripe, Linear) are also the most streamlined. Removing clutter highlights what truly matters.
  • No. Green design is built into our workflow, not charged as an extra. In reality, a lean website requires less maintenance, loads faster (better SEO), and costs less to host in the long run.
  • The RWEB framework by the GreenIT collective (5th edition, 2025) covers 115 best practices organised by theme: functional design, UX/UI design, technical architecture, front/back development, media, and hosting. Each practice has a priority and difficulty level. We apply them pragmatically according to each project's context.
  • Infomaniak is the only European hosting provider that offsets its emissions at 200% (not 100%, double). Its Swiss datacentres run on 100% renewable energy, without air conditioning, with servers used for 15 years instead of 3-5. It's the most coherent choice for responsible WordPress hosting.
  • We use several tools: EcoIndex for estimated carbon footprint per page, Lighthouse for performance, GreenIT Analysis for technical details (weight, requests, DOM). These measurements are integrated into our delivery process and post-launch monitoring.
